I like the way you think, Andy. I’ve really enjoyed reading your entries thus far and finally decided to vote with my pocketbook, as it were. As I read your ruminations on the meaning of Via Chicago, I had my own thought. Maybe Jeff is saying that he found his identity--as a musician, as a husband, as a father--via Chicago. (Thanks to Susie, the music community, the clubs and the other resources that are in Chicago and not Belleville.) Just a random thought, and I’m not sure it holds up to scrutiny, but your words prompted this idea so I thought I’d share.

Thank you so much for the paid subscription! I truly appreciate the support! And I like your insight into the song’s meaning. You might be on to something. Maybe the line about “I dreamed about killing you again last night…” is about killing the version of himself he had to shed in order to find his way to a home with Susie? Anyhow, thank you so, so much!

Ooh, I love that thought about the “killing” line. I’ll think about that.
